OCT 25, 17 .. MICHIGAN'S MACKINAC ISLAND

Almost one full month ago, September the 30th, 2017, to be exact, I published a Post showing the Mackinac Bridge that links the State of Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

At that time I promised to publish a Post showing Mackinac Island.

The below link will take you to my Dot.net website and it will show you some maps that will assist you to orientate as to where these two features are located.

So here we go loop-de-loop with some photos of Mackinac Island, Michigan.

To get out to Mackinac Island, Patti and I rode a ferry boat. As you might expect, there are several ferry boat operators and there are several types of ferries. Some are high speed and very luxurious. Some are more mundane and simple. Read : Some cost a lot of money. Some are far less expensive. Our ferry cost us US$ 52 for the two of us round trip.

We took the ferry from St. Ignace. We did not take the ferry from Mackinaw City.

Below are far more ferry photos than you will ever want, or need, to see.

We are aboard our ferry boat and heading to Mackinac Island.

We paid a slightly extra fare that enabled us to go out to, and under, the Mackinac Bridge. Two ferries per day offer this option.

IF there is one single most important landmark on Mackinac Island, it is The Grand Hotel.

While a student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, during the summer of 1957, I was employed as a bellman at The Grand Hotel.

IF you refer to a professional bellman as a bellhop, you may be told..

"The last belle I hopped was your sister smart guy."

"I can dress Cap up but I can't take him out." /s/ Patti

The below small lighthouse is another prominent landmark that you see as you enter the Mackinac Island Harbor.

Time-wise, and photographic sequence-wise, the below three photos of the above lighthouse are out-of-order BUT, I wanted to slip them in here. As you can see, they were snapped from the island looking out at the lighthouse.

We have arrived at Mackinac Island.

The below three photos show the above harbor area as viewed looking back from the island.

Step ashore we are now on Mackinac Island.

Our great friend Chad 45039, told us that we had to go to Horn's Bar & Restaurant and order their World Famous Nachos.

Patti and I thought that our good friend, Tom Tiger 48067, grey sweatshirt and white shorts, sitting at the end of the bar, had slipped on up to Mackinac Island to surprise us.

IF it is possible that we have ever enjoyed better Nachos, neither Patti nor I can recall when and where.

"Hi Crocodile Dundee. Nice of you to stop in here."

"Now that's a bowl of salsa Mate!"

Another landmark, or if you will, another real tradition on Mackinac Island is to ride a horse drawn carriage on a tour of the island.

Your carriage tour plays out thusly : You make a reservation. You will wait an hour or more for an opening. You then go into a local restaurant and enjoy a meal. Then you go out and board your carriage.

How very handy! Horn's Bar is located at the starting point of your carriage tour. Location. Location. Location.

We were told not to sit in the front row of carriage seats because the horses, from time to time, relieve themselves.

This is, in fact, accurate. However, it was not a problem and the front seats, immediately behind the driver were excellent.

Basically, there are no motorized vehicles on the island. However I believe that there is a fire truck and an ambulance available for emergency use.

We are approaching The Grand Hotel. Our carriage tour did not stop at the hotel. We did not have the time or the energy to walk to it for a visit.

The horse barns.

Arch Rock is yet another important landmark on the island.

It was at this point on our horse drawn carriage tour, that we witnessed the below views of the harbor that I showed earlier.

Now we board our ferry boat and return back to St. Ignace.

Our old friend the lighthouse.

We bid a fond farewell to The Grand Hotel.

During the summer of 1957, while working at The Grand Hotel, I met the lady, the mother of my two sons, that I was to marry one year later on August 2nd 1958. Prior to our marriage, together we took a sentimental journey back to Mackinac Island. During our visit, I proposed to her and she accepted my proposal.

"Patti, My Dear One, it's been a very long day. Are you hungry?"

Harrison's Diner, St. Ignace, Michigan.

One bowl of tomato-basil soup (above) was so good that two bowls (below) were better.

We split a great chicken club sandwich.

Goodnight and goodbye to Harrison's Diner and to St. Ignace, Michigan.

We then drove an hour South to Gaylord, Michigan.

Bed has never looked better.

Just one day in our full and wonderful lives.

Patti and Cap
