OCT 19, 24 .. AUTUMN LEAVES 2024..

Today's Post is courtesy of Tom and Ginny, our great friends and guest contributors who live in Southern Nevada. Along with me, we all grew up in Michigan.

Yes it is a short Post but a very sweet one.

OCT 10, 24 .. OUR FIRST TOUCH OF WINTER 2024-25..

Both Patti and I know! 

Yes Oh Yes! We both fully understand that this first snow, call it a "dusting", will not "last" too long..

BUT this does not change the fact that it IS indeed our very first snow of the Winter 2024 - 25 up here in Anchorage, Alaska.

Too bad, so sorry Alaska Winter 2024-25! One month from today, on Sunday, November the 10th, 2024, Patti and I will be flying South from Anchorage, Alaska, to Las Vegas, Nevada. Then Tom Tiger will drive us by auto to Laughlin, Nevada, where we will spend six days at "our" Edgewater Hotel. Then we drive South to Lake Havasu City to spend the winter months in the Arizona Desert.

One short year ago tomorrow, it was Wednesday, October the 11th, 2023, we had our first Alaskan Winter 2023-24 snow.

Now we come to today, and our first "real touch" of this up coming winter".

This morning, one day shy of an exact year ago, we awoke to the first snow of the Alaska 2024-25 Winter.

Yes we are "repeating ourselves".. 

Yes Oh Yes! We both fully understand that this first "dusting" of snow will not "last" too long, but it sure is a sign of what lies ahead.

Patti was up at 9am, and said that the ground was completely covered with snow. We both are sorry she didn't awaken me to snap photos then.

I got up around 11am and immediately snapped the below photos but a lot of the snow had already melted. 

At 5:50pm in Alaska, as we publish this Post, you would not know that it had snowed last night.

OCT 8, 24 .. AUTUMN 2024.. MIGRATING CANADA GEESE..

We have published several Posts showing autumn leaves as we experience Autumn 2024 here in Anchorage, Alaska.

Another "Sign of Autumn" are the migrating Canada Geese. After checking our mail at our local Post Office, as we passed a large field, one we pass often, Patti said.. "Oh! Look at all of the Canada Geese!" I had totally missed seeing them.

Sure enough! There was quite a large flock of geese, resting en route South.

I tried but they would not let me get too close to them.

On October the 18th, the Fairview Lions Park looked like this..

The migrating Canada Geese are long gone South.

The migration of Canada Geese, is one of the wonders of "Mother Nature". We love hearing them sending out messages to each other as they fly south over our condo building!!

On October the 30th, the snow had arrived. There were NO Geese to be seen.

OCT 4, 24 ( 2 / 2 ) .. AUTUMN IN ANCHORAGE 2024

Today, Friday the 4th of October, our landscape maintenance team was busy removing the leaves we showed in part 1.

I had no idea they would be here today and was fortunate to hear them busy at work.

The leaf blowers are extremely loud! Clouds of leaves were "flying high". 

I have never seen this process.

The leaves in the leaf pile are raked onto a large tarpaulin.

The maintenance team seemed to enjoy me shooting photos!

Back to work guys!

The pile of leaves on the tarpaulin in the photo above are being dragged to the street to be picked up by a truck. You will see details of this further down below.

That pile of leaves is gone! It is history!

Now we move to the leaves immediately just off the back porch of our Condo.

Here the maintenance crew comes, heading our way!

Just look at those leaves flying! The noise was also substantial!

 

Volia! The leaves are gone from the Green Strip behind our Condo. Well they are gone at least until more leaves fall. But I doubt the maintenance crew will be back this year to clear more leaves.

Now we will see how the leaves are transported out of our neighborhood.

Voila! 

What a process this turned out to be. This was the first time that I have seen this. I just "lucked out" and was able to see it up close and personal!

The next two photos were taken several days later when the leaf clean up crew revisited our area.

Let's move up closer and get a good look at the process of loading the leaves into the truck.

The very large black hose is a powerful suction hose that sucks the leaves that had been collected onto the tarp.

The leaves are fed into the suction hose. 

Do you see our white Chevrolet Suburban in the background of the below photo?

Where are the leaves taken once they are loaded into the truck?

It depends 100% upon who owns the truck. The Municipality of Anchorage (MofA) or a private contractor hired by the MofA.

The MofA work crews dispose of them in various city owned dump sites, from ordinary sanitary land fill areas to other city owned dumps.

The private contractors are free to dispose of the leaves as they wish provided they do not break MofA Ordinances governing dumps.

Due to MofA Ordinances, the leaves are not used for mulch because of the odor that would arise therefrom.

Whew! What a process.
