AUG 20, 26.. NATIONAL RADIO DAY..

Yet again. Hello NATIONAL TODAY! We welcome your holiday about National Radio Day !! 

National Radio Day tunes in every August 20th.

Patti and I can well remember "Back in our youth in the 1940's" when television did not exist.

Radio.. was.. an.. important.. thing.. in.. our.. families..

Was it only "yesterday"? I clearly remember, on December the 7th 1941, listening to my parents radio as Walter Winchell talked about the Japanese having bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Patti has her own vivid memories of listening to her family radio!  Here are Patti's recollections: 

"I can vividly picture my parents, my older brother and myself sitting together in front of the 3 foot tall radio in our living room, raptly listening to dramatic and comedy programs together.  Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, The Shadow, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly and Amos 'n' Andy were a few of our favorites. We followed these programs loyally!"

National Radio Day celebrates the powerful medium that shaped communication and culture for over a century. From news to music, radio connected communities and informed millions.

Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, is widely credited for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for developing Marconi's law and a radio telegraph system. His innovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries laid the foundation for modern radio communication. In 1909, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy.

However, it took quite a bit of time after the discovery of the radio for the technology to be used as communication. This was both because the inventors hadn’t yet realized the practical and life-changing applications of their development and because there were many more components needed to transmit and detect electrical waves.

Radio continues to reach a vast audience, with approximately 90% of Americans tuning in weekly. This includes traditional broadcast and digital streaming platforms.

We have barely "scratched the surface" of Radio and its history!

Serendipity ?

Serendipity is the emergence and development of events by chance.

Serendipity is the capacity to make intriguing discoveries by chance.

Serendipity is also described as a happy accident or a pleasant surprise.

Serendipity Day is celebrated to encourage people to confront unexpected good fortune.

Serendipity is an unplanned fortunate discovery.

The concept is often associated with scientific and technological breakthroughs, where accidental discoveries led to new insights or inventions. Many significant discoveries in history were serendipitous, including penicillin, Post-it notes, Popsicles, and the microwave oven, arising from unforeseen circumstances that were then recognized and capitalized upon.

The word ‘serendipity’ has been around since the mid-1700s, but it was officially recognized for the first time in 2010. In general, serendipity refers to the capacity to make intriguing discoveries by chance.

Well hello once again NATIONAL TODAY..

I want to begin with one of my all time favorite Poems.

Don't Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low but the debts are high,

And you want to smile but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

 

Life is strange with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many failures turn about

When we might have won had we stuck it out.

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –

You may succeed with another blow.

 

Success is failure turned inside out –

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

You can never tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –

It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

There seem to be several authors to Don't Quit. One was John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892). I will assume the Poem is in the Public Domain.

NEVER GIVE UP DAY..

Never Give Up Day arrives every August 18th, inspiring us to embrace perseverance and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.

Hello and Yes! Welcome NATIONAL TODAY to our website.

Love Your Bookshop Day celebrates the invaluable role of local bookshops every August 14th.

Books!! I hear the word and I can't help but think of Patti and her love and passion for reading books, both hand held hard cover as well as paperbacks, and oh yes! e-books on her Amazon Kindle!

Speaking of Amazon, just look at and read the below image..

Amazon is responsible for a whopping 40% of U.S. New Book Sales!! 

The education of the Public is dependent on the type of books read. The more people read, the more people have access to the information they need to do their best. People can apply the knowledge they receive from the books they read and are better equipped to make better decisions in their lives.

While exact numbers fluctuate, the American Booksellers Association reports a significant increase in independent bookstores in recent years, with over 2,500 locations across the U.S. in 2023. This growth reflects a renewed appreciation for local, curated literary spaces.

According to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, the average American adult reads approximately 14 books per year, with print books remaining the most popular format. This figure underscores a consistent interest in reading across the population..

Patti on the other hand, reads between 3 and 4 books a week!

AUG 9, 26.. NATIONAL HAND HOLDING DAY..

Hello NATIONAL TODAY.. How nice of you to join us!

This sounds like a very nice Holiday!

National Hand Holding Day arrives every August 9th.

This day emphasizes the importance of touch, fostering affection and connection across all relationships, from romantic partners to family and friends. Reach out and connect, offer support, or simply share a moment of closeness with those you cherish.

A study conducted by the University of North Carolina further demonstrated the remarkable effects of holding hands. 

During the study, several couples were assembled and told to give speeches. In the events leading up to their presentations, one-half of the couples sat together and held hands, after which they embraced for 20 seconds while another group sat away from their significant others before giving their speech. 

When tested, it was discovered that the people who were separated from their partners had higher heart rates and their blood pressures rose twice as high as the couples who held hands and hugged each other. This illustrates the positive effects that hand holding can have on people’s emotions and stress levels.
