Patti and I, either together, or individually, have three favorite walking routes here in our neighborhood that we enjoy when the weather permits.
Our favorite walk is from our Condo over to our local Sitka Street Park.
And at the far end of our Sitka Street Park walk, is the below bridge.
Our second favorite walk is from our Condo to the Hillstrand Pond.
As with our Sitka Street Park, we also have a bridge at the Hillstrand Pond.
And we have the ducks.
The last walk I make alone when I walk to attend meetings at our local Church.
For some years now, we have wondered what the distances are from our Condo to the Sitka Street Park Bridge, to the Hillstrand Pond Bridge, and for myself, to the Church for my meetings.
By chance do any of you know what the below device is?
It is a Surveyor's Measuring Wheel.
As you walk, its counter measures the distance you have walked. One revolution of the wheel is (approximately) 3 feet 3 inches. The above wheel has a diameter of 12.5 inches which would make its circumference 39.27 inches (or approximately 3 feet 3 inches).
I was interested in the comparative distances of the above three walks and also in the total distance. I borrowed the measuring wheel to satisfy my curiosity.
What did I learn?
The Condo to Sitka Park Bridge
1,701 feet or 0.32 miles each way.
The Condo to the Church
2,577 feet or 0.49 miles each way.
The Condo to Hillstrand Pond
2,678 feet or 0.51 miles each way.
Now I know why I get cold walking the 1 mile distance (to and home) from Hillstrand Pond in the winter.
And Patti and I now know our favorite walk is just over 1/2 a mile.
