IF you want to go straight to my near-death encounter, scroll down 23 photos. Otherwise just enjoy the entire post.
Once a month, every 30-days actually, I take a single, 150mg, Risedronate pill for treatment of my male osteoporosis.
Today, Sunday, June the 10th, is my Risedronate day.
Nothing but plain tap-water is allowed during the night.
Upon awakening, I am to ingest the Risedronate with from 6 to 8-oz of tap-water.
After ingesting the pill I must remain vertical (I can not lie down) for 30-minutes or risk very serious side-effects. I am able to sit but, being who-I-am, I 'vastly overdo' this once-a-month process.
Winter / Summer / Spring / Fall, clear weather or foul weather, I go for a (absolute minimum) 1-hour walk. If an outdoors walk is not possible (severe winter weather) I get on our treadmill and then alternating with 15-minute stints, I use our treadmill and walk up and back down our stairs (four flights) here in our condo. Again for 15-minutes at a time.
My regimen (being vertical and not even sitting) usually lasts from 2 to 3 hours.
I first began coming to Alaska in early 1980. I became a full-time Alaskan Resident on December 22nd, 1997. So all-told I have some 38-years of Alaska experience under-my-belt.
IF, after 38-years of life experience 'up-here', I have learned one, single, simple lesson, that one simple lesson is : The Alasakan wildlife can be extremely dangerous. In fact they can / and once-in-awhile they DO, kill human beings. Moose and bears are the two most common and most significant life-threatening wildlife up here.
Here inside of our condo, we often see moose immediately outside our living room windows.
What to do IF you encounter a moose?

I hope, that IF you read the above links, you will notice that one of the MOST significant and dangerous signs of a moose being hostile, is that its ears are laid-back against their skulls!
Please remember this Sports Fans, young and old, ladies and gentlemen, if a moose approaches you with laid-back ears you are in life-threatening danger.
Always, be on guard for the unguarded moment.
It is summer. Today is an absolutely magnificent day. Sunny and bright about 60F.
So, having taken my Risedronate pill, out and off I went for a good long walk-in-the-woods for several hours.
After all of my medical-drama over the past few years, I am NOT at all interested in being run-down by anything or anyone (from bicyclists to automobiles). To assist them in NOT running-me-down I wear 'my colors'.
From our condo, 'the woods' are a very easy 10-minute walk.
What you are seeing here, are photos of the Chester Creek Trail that connects with the The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, one of the most beautiful in the nation!

It is a multi-use trail and the paved sections are used by walkers / joggers / bicyclists / locals / visitors.
Detroit Tiger Tom are you following this Post?
Tom there are even baseball fields along the trail.
I mean to ask you all, is this a beautiful trail?
ARE YOU READY?
I MOST CERTAINLY WAS NOT READY.
My heart was still racing, and my hands were still shaking for almost one full hour after ..
'CAP'S MOOSE ENCOUNTER'
So there I was, calmly walking along the trail, on the most beautiful of days, my camera around my neck, when all of a sudden .. I looked back and ..
"Oh My God!"
"Just look at this!"
"A Moose! And he looks upset and hostile!"
"IF I am going to die, and I well might, I am going to chronicle it with a few photos!"
Look at his ears! They are laid-back against his skull. He is about 10-feet from me and approaching me. As I write these words, my heart just began to race again, just by me reliving my 'Moose Encounter'
Then he focused in upon me and began to approach me. Will you all look at the ears! Look at him. He 'looks' upset and hostile.
I .. f-f-f-f-f-froze!
Then he crossed over the trail coming at me on my left.
Man-oh-manischewitz! His ears are still laid-back.
Then he again moved across the trail back to my right.
Notice my shadow at the bottom of the next two photos. I mean I could almost smell this breath.
"Oh My God! His ears are up!" .. "This is great!"
Me, frozen-in-place, and the moose yearling, just stood, almost face-to-face, studying each other.
Then, in a twinkling, it was all over!
His yearling-twin appeared and off the two of them rambled.
Do you want to hear about a miracle? My hands were shaking like you wouldn't believe and all but a few photos came out in-focus and not blurred from my hands shaking uncontrolably.
Well?
I walked back into civilization.
East Northern Lights Boulevard, Anchorage, Alaska.
Down UAA (University of Alaska Anchorage) Drive I strolled, heart still racing and hands still shaking.
The Engineering College.
What a beautiful campus UAA has.
Oh! That's me in the photos waving atcha all.
That is that, sez Bobba Caps. Patti drove over, picked me up, and off to a meeting we went.
I looked death-in-the-eye and I am still here.
Yes! Truly! It really happened, here on the UAA Campus.
Cap .. (Patti missed out on all of the above fun)

Moose Attacks and Kills Man at U. of Alaska
Anchorage, Alaska -- A moose trampled a man to death at the University of Alaska here last week.
Campus police were investigating the death of Myong Chin Ra, a 71-year-old Anchorage resident, who had come within 10 feet of the cow moose and its calf...
Cap .. (Patti missed out on all of the above fun)
Holy cow, Cap! My heart was pounding just reading this. I have a healthy respect and fear around wild animals. In my motorcycle days, going through Yellowstone, there would be moose and bison roaming by the road. People would pull over and try to get close up pictures. Not me! I am so glad it changed it's mind and left you alone!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU KATHLEEN for your comment. So happy you got a kick out of my 'drama' with the Moose yearling. One frontal kick and I would have been history. Me too I am happy it left me alone after sizing me up. Smiles from Patti and I.
