MAR 9, 19 .. KOREAN WAR .. UN FORCES FIRST BATTLE MEMORIAL

I will begin this Post by expressing my deepest, most heartfelt thanks and appreciation to my friends Peter and Lisa, without whom my visit to this Memorial may very well not have been possible.

By far one of the most rewarding aspects of my two recent visits to South Korea, has been spending time at three of the Korean War Memorial sites located here in the greater Seoul Metro Area established to honor the many who fought in the war.

This is my third different visit to one of these Memorial sites. Like the other two (the enormous Memorial in Seoul, and the Memorial Hall for the Incheon Landing Operation) my time spent here with Peter and Lisa was deeply touching. I most certainly am learning volumes of information about the Korean War.

I assume by this point in time that all of you who follow my travels know that I was a member of the United States Marine Corps. When the Korean War erupted on June the 25th 1950, I was about to enter High School. At that point in my life, because of the Incheon Amphibious landing on September 15, 1950, I realized that the Marine Corps was actively involved in the Korean War.

When I was on active duty in the Marine Corps, I served with many Korean War Marines. This is the reason why I am so interested in the Korean War.

The memorial I am showing you in this Post honors the first (what I would call) really all-out battle between the joint UN and Korean forces against the invading forces from the North.

THE UN FORCES FIRST BATTLE MEMORIAL

It is housed in a very attractive building.

The below photo shows an overview of the area around the Memorial.

Let's go inside of the Memorial.

This first major and important battle of the Korean War was fought on July 5th 1950 in Jukmiryeong, a district of Osan. The battle lasted 6 hours and 15 minutes and the task force, severely out numbered finally had to retreat.

Below is a photo of an exceptional video display that shows the battle in great detail.

Below are photos of the very special monument that overlooks the Memorial site.

I quote from above : BLOOD FORMED A STREAM AFTER OVER SIX HOURS OF FIERCE STRUGGLE . . WHILE FORLORN SOULS SLEEP ON THIS HILL, HOW CAN WE FORGET OUR FRIENDSHIP WITH ALLIED NATIONS CREATED IN BLOOD !

In the very center of the above photo (the black shadow points to it) you see the location of a new building that is now under construction to expand the Memorial.

I will leave you with the below images of this wonderful Memorial.

With Great Respect I Honor All Of Those Who Served During The Korean War.

  1. I hope everyone else enjoys Cap's blog as much as I do. Anyone knows, time spent with Cap is time well-spent. He is a man of his word & spent an entire weekend with Lisa & me, just as he said he would. Visiting this memorial with Cap was one of the best educations I have had to remind me that freedom is not free. Spending this time with Cap was one of the highlights on my life, to remind me that wealth is measured by friendships.
Do yourself a big favor & spend some time with Cap n Patti if you are blessed with the opportunity. I promise you it will be time well-spent.
    Love Peter & Lisa
