DEC 18, 18 .. ABAKAN ( АБАКАН ), RUSSIAN SIBERIA .. A FIRST LOOK

Today dawned clear and sunny here in АБАКАН (Abakan).

I must share this with all of you. I had a lot of trouble with the name Irkutsk. I kept wanting to call it Irtusk.

Finally Khoso in Ulaanbaatar said to me, "Cap you are going to Irkutsk so you need to pronounce its name correctly."

And then I got serious. Ear - Koot - sssK. And it is easy to spell in Russian cyrillic. ИРКУСК.

Now we will turn to Abakan.

I kept putting an 'L' in its name. Albakan. Then came Akaban.

And since I was coming here to Abakan, again I got serious.

How about the 1950's song The Aba Daba Honeymoon?

THAT takes care of the Aba part of Abakan

My Mongolian name is Kanbaatar. So Aba + Kan = Abakan.

I think I've got it, Abakan it will be, at least for now.

It too spells very easy in Russian cyrillic. АБАКАН

How about a photo or two or even maybe three of АБАКАН.

We have an enclosed sun porch outside of our flat.

Looking up the street in front of our building. On the right edge of the below photo, you can see the sun porch next to ours.

The following photos pan from left to right.

Two close up photos of the pair of buildings that are prominent in our view from our sun porch.

In all but the first photo above, you can see tower cranes. When we went out in our automobile, I got different views of them.

A few random shots of Abakan on a nice, sunny day.

The tower cranes seem to be in abundance in every city I've visited.

Smiles .. Cap

  1. What a gorgeous looking sunny day for your first full day in Abakan! I looked up the temperature there for when you were out and about, and it was in the mid 20's. Pretty nice for a pleasant winter day. I also looked up the population of Abakan and there are about 170,000 people .. compared to Kyzyl's about 115,000. Both cities are the capitol cities of their respective republics. We all keep getting more knowledgeable about Siberia, thanks to you! Smiles and hugs. Patti

  3. Ah, you're in a Khrushchev apartment building looking pout on more Khrushchev apartment buildingsI I'm not sure those are sun porches but deep freezers. You can freeze dry your laundry there, too,.

    1. How correct you are about the sun porches being deep freezers! I dry my laundry inside. Don't want to risk the porch door suddenly freezing and then being unable to completely close. I went out on a warm day.
