DEC 9, 14 .. HONG KONG'S OBSERVATION WHEEL ..

Before I begin this post I want to say to Patti ..

"Patti! This Post is just for you My Dear One!"

As you discover what this Post is about .. You will understand!

Life has its little quirks and its little twists and turns.  Fractions of a second can change our lives forever.  We never know.

Had I not gone from Kowloon across Victoria Harbor on the MTR to Hong Kong Central to make an exchange of something I purchased last Sunday .. Today would have been entirely different because I would have stayed in Kowloon to ride the buses.

After successfully making the exchange .. When I walked out of the ifc shopping mall (Note: ifc is not capitalized) .. Had I turned to my right to go to the Hong Kong Central MTR Station .. Today would have been totally different!

I haven't a clue why the print changed as is has above.  In the editor is all looks the same. Oh well ..

Instead when I left the ifc mall I decided to walk to my left to go catch a Star Ferry across Victoria Harbor to return to Kowloon.

By turning left I walked past the Hong Kong Observation wheel.

Hong Kong has one BIG OBSERVATION WHEEL !

I love you Wikipedia!

Ferris wheel (also known as an observation wheelbig wheel and Paris Wheel), named after George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., is a nonbuilding structure consisting of a rotating upright wheel with multiple passenger-carrying components (commonly referred to as passenger cars, cabins, capsules, gondolas, or pods) attached to the rim in such a way that as the wheel turns, they are kept upright, usually by gravity.

Patti and I viewed the below Observation wheel for the first time when we crossed Victoria Harbor on November 14th to attend a meeting in Hong Kong.  When we returned it was night.

When I snapped the above photo the Observation wheel was either still under construction or testing was not completed.  In any event it was not operating.

Below are three photos of the wheel in the daylight as viewed from Victoria Harbor while we were riding a Star Ferry.

This Observation wheel is quite the sight-to-see.

"Dad take my photo!"

Because I was walking to the Star Ferry I walked right past the Observation wheel and again it whispered to me ..

"Dad take my photo!"

"Again Dad!"

As I was idly looking at the wheel SUDDENLY I noticed that it was moving.

"Hum-m-m they must be testing it." I mused to myself.

Then I looked very closely at it and I saw what appeared to be people inside the cabins.  Upon close investigation I saw there was no doubt that there were people inside the cabins because I could see some of them moving around.

"Hum-m-m I wonder if they are dignitaries and other important people going for a first ride on the wheel?"

"I am going to find my way over to the wheel and check it out!"

"Oh My Goodness!  It is operational!"

"Sir would you like to ride the wheel?" .. A most charming young lady asked me ..

Captain .. Who-but-you capture photographs of ticket sellers while you are on-the-run?!

"Here are the prices Sir." .. "Are you an elder Sir?"

Captain .. Who-but-you have the ticket seller hold up the price sheet so you can photograph it?!

I am going for a ride on the Hong Kong Observation Wheel!

The above official ticket calls it the Hong Kong Observation Wheel.

As an elder I paid 70 HKG Dollars which is about $9.09 US Dollars.  You want a deal? This is a DEAL!

It is get-in-line time.

In the photo below notice the gentleman with the sun glasses. He and his lady were in my cabin.

We are very close to the Central Star Ferry Pier.

Our cabin is coming to rest for boarding.

Note if you will the blue tint on the cabin windows.  This blue tint affects all of the photos that I snapped during our ride.

We are almost ready to board the wheel.

We is four people. Each cabin will comfortably seat eight people but today it was seating for four only. I think that four people in a cabin will be the normal cabin occupancy. Larger parties where everyone is together is a different matter.

We were a couple (man and lady) and two single men .. myself and another gentleman.  All of us were elders.

Now we have boarded and the below photo is of the cabin 28 in front of our cabin.

OK Sports Fans .. Please sit back and enjoy the view!

I am not sure just how many more photos of Hong Kong's skyline you all are able to tolerate.

Below we are looking over at Kowloon.  You should recognize it by now. The light tan colored Hong Kong Cultural Center is visible as a landmark.

I am not tired nor bored with the Hong Kong Skyline .. Perhaps neither are you.

I just want to keep-checking out the structure .. You know .. Just to be sure nothing is loose and we are NOT about to fall out of the air!

Now Captain .. You want silly .. THAT Captain is silly .. What could you do if you saw a dangerous condition?

Hey up there cabin 28! .. Are you enjoying the ride too?

Looking over at Kowloon.

To be honest .. I kept myself busy with snapping photographs. I did NOT want to get-into how high-up-in-the-air we were at the topmost points.

By The Way .. Our ride was approximately 20-minutes in duration and the wheel made three (3) complete revolutions.

See my Post Script below for more information.

Can you see the other cabins through the structure.  Look closely.

In the East .. There is much made of Karma.  I must not be doing too badly Karma-wise.  I seem to get myself surrounded by some very VERY fine people.

The fourth in this foursome was also a single elder gentleman. In contrast with the couple in the above photographs who were extremely photogenic .. My partner on my right would NOT cooperate with me for a photo.

So I CAPTURED him while we were riding the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbor back to Kowloon!

Yo! Cabin 28 .. Are you guys still with us? Good! We don't want to lose you!

In the below photo .. West Kowloon is in the background.

One last look-back at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel!

I caught the Lady Star Ferry as we were approaching the Kowloon Star Ferry Pier. This is the first-time-ever that I have been able to see and to photograph her out in the harbor.  I have photographed her docked at the pier but never underway!

A Grand Dame and a Grand Way to end a Grand Afternoon Adventure!

Well My Dear Patti .. I hope you enjoyed the ride on the wheel with me!

Love .. Cap ..

  1. GREAT POST!!! Pretty exciting to be "on the ride" with you after we had been watching the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, idle and looking like it was in the midst of a serious construction area, each and every time we were within eye-site of it while I was there. The ticket lady looks very pleasant and enthusiastic; your companions in your cabin look very dignified and friendly. Again, thanks for the ride. It was delightful!!! Love and hugs. Patti

    1. It was fun to have you there with me on the ride. The cabin was roomy and spacious so I am sure you would not have felt claustrophobic. The the ticket lady was a charmer and such a good sport with my photographing her and the price sheet. Little did either of us know .. after looking at the not-yet-operational Observation Wheel so many times .. that we would experience a ride. Love .. Cap ..

  2. Good for you, Cap!!! You got some fabulous photos and had a cooperative couple (and an uncooperative) co-rider on the Observation Wheel.

I don't tire of your photos of the skyline. I like it that I'm familiar with it, thanks to you.

Keep on enjoying everything you do, Cap!!
