Friday .. February 3rd of 2012 .. just over a year ago .. I took a one-day bus tour of some of the local points of interest in and around Pondicherry. It truly was one great day!
Auroville WAS the feature attraction!
So.. let's "Get on the Bus Patti". This phrase goes back to 1996 in Calcutta when I SCREAMED .. at the top of my lungs to Patti .. "GET ON THE BUS !" .. or get left behind in Calcutta .. because I was already ON the bus .. and it was about to move! Patti got on the bus!
My one-day tour was an 'official' tour sponsored by the local government. Without fail .. over my 22+ years of visiting India .. local government tours and guest houses are exceptionally good.
Below we have gotten off the bus and begun to do some walking ..
Patti .. does any name on the sign above 'jump out at you' ? Hint .. see the bottom of the sign!
Below is the Auroville Visitor's Center .. where a ten minute excellent presentation about exactly what Auroville represents is presented.
Now it is time to do some 'walking' in nature .. the sign below tells us where we are heading. Again I hope that you 'Google' Auroville in order to understand what it represents. Auroville IS very VERY special .. and 'I owe' the PTDC (Pondicherry Tourism Development Corp) tour for seeing all of this.
Got your 'hiking boots' on .. here we go ..
From time-to-time along the trail .. some nice shade awaited us ..
And some 'interesting' rock gardens ..
There .. in the distance .. 'peeking' at us through some trees is our very first view of THE MATRIMANDIR ! Do you see it .. in the center of the photo .. the Gold Colored Dome.
In the photo below .. we have an open view of .. THE MATRIMANDIR!
The following two photos give the appearance that we were very close to THE MATRIMANDIR. We were not .. but thanks to my telephoto camera lens I could pull-it-in-closer.
And our one final close-up shot of .. THE MATRIMANDIR !
During the presentation at the Visitor's Center before our walk began .. we were shown what the inside of THE MATRIMANDIR looks like. There is a very large .. 70 cm diameter optical quality crystal ball that represents the divine consciousness. It is a symbol of future realization. Coming down from the top of THE MATRIMANDIR is an (almost Lazer-like) beam of natural sun-light concentrated into a beam directed downward into the glass ball. You must get special permission to go inside of THE MATRIMANDIR and ONLY to meditate .. NOT to do a 'tourist visit'. It is NOT EASY to get this special permission!
To REPEAT .. to really know about Auroville .. please 'Google' it and study the information you will find therein. I can NOT possibly do it justice here. My mission here in this humble post has been to stimulate your interest in .. and to roughly acquaint you with .. this place on Earth called Auroville!
